This is separate from the advertising and analytics identifiers we share with partners such as Meta to measure how our ads perform, which are described in WHEN AND WITH WHOM DO WE SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION? below. We collect the information described here only from visitors in the United States; we do not collect it from visitors in other regions.

How do we process your information? We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law. 1. WHAT INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT?
Personal information you disclose to us
In Short: We collect personal information that you provide to us.

We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us when you register on the Services, express an interest in obtaining information about us or our products and Services, when you participate in activities on the Services, or otherwise when you contact us.

Payment Data. We may collect data necessary to process your payment if you choose to make purchases, such as your payment instrument number, and the security code associated with your payment instrument. All personal information that you provide to us must be true, complete, and accurate, and you must notify us of any changes to such personal information.

Information automatically collected
In Short: Some information — such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address and/or browser and device characteristics — is collected automatically when you visit our Services.

We automatically collect certain information when you visit, use, or navigate the Services. This information does not reveal your specific identity (like your name or contact information) but may include device and usage information, such as your IP address, browser and device characteristics, operating system, language preferences, referring URLs, device name, country, location, information about how and when you use our Services, and other technical information. This information is primarily needed to maintain the security and operation of our Services, and for our internal analytics and reporting purposes.

The information we collect includes:

Log and Usage Data. Log and usage data is service-related, diagnostic, usage, and performance information our servers automatically collect when you access or use our Services and which we record in log files. Depending on how you interact with us, this log data may include your IP address, device information, browser type, and settings and information about your activity in the Services (such as the date/time stamps associated with your usage, pages and files viewed, searches, and other actions you take such as which features you use), device event information (such as system activity, error reports (sometimes called "crash dumps"), and hardware settings).

Device Data. We collect device data such as information about your computer, phone, tablet, or other device you use to access the Services. Depending on the device used, this device data may include information such as your IP address (or proxy server), device and application identification numbers, location, browser type, hardware model, Internet service provider and/or mobile carrier, operating system, and system configuration information.

Location Data. We collect location data such as information about your device's location, which can be either precise or imprecise. How much information we collect depends on the type and settings of the device you use to access the Services. For example, we may use GPS and other technologies to collect geolocation data that tells us your current location (based on your IP address). You can opt out of allowing us to collect this information either by refusing access to the information or by disabling your Location setting on your device. However, if you choose to opt out, you may not be able to use certain aspects of the Services.

Error and diagnostic data. Error and diagnostic data is information collected automatically when errors or performance issues occur in the app. Examples include error messages, stack traces, session replay recordings (with input fields masked), navigation paths within the app, and browser performance metrics. This data is collected through our error monitoring service (Sentry) and is used to identify and fix bugs, improve app stability, and enhance the user experience.

2. HOW DO WE PROCESS YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law. We process the personal information for the following purposes listed below. We may also process your information for other purposes only with your prior explicit consent.

We process your personal information for a variety of reasons, depending on how you interact with our Services, including:

To facilitate account creation and authentication and otherwise manage user accounts. We may process your information so you can create and log in to your account, as well as keep your account in working order.

4. WHEN AND WITH WHOM DO WE SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?

Vendors, Consultants, and Other Third-Party Service Providers. We may share your data with third-party vendors, service providers, contractors, or agents ("third parties") who perform services for us or on our behalf and require access to such information to do that work. We have contracts in place with our third parties, which are designed to help safeguard your personal information. This means that they cannot do anything with your personal information unless we have instructed them to do it. They will also not share your personal information with any organization apart from us. We also may need to share your personal information in the following situations:

Business Transfers. We may share or transfer your information in connection with, or during negotiations of, any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business to another company.

Shopping ingredients through Instacart. Mae offers the option to shop a recipe's ingredients through Instacart, an independent third-party service operated by Maplebear Inc. (doing business as Instacart). When you choose to shop a recipe, we send that recipe's ingredient names and quantities, along with recipe details such as its title and number of servings, to Instacart so it can build your shopping page. If you have indicated a vegan or gluten-free dietary preference, we include a matching dietary filter with that request, and we do not send your other food preferences or your list of ingredients to avoid to Instacart. Once you continue to Instacart, you are on Instacart's own website or app, and Instacart's privacy policy and terms govern your activity there.

Checking grocery prices through Kroger. Mae can answer grocery price questions using data from Kroger, an independent third-party service operated by The Kroger Co. This works with a Kroger-family grocery store (such as Kroger, Fred Meyer, or Harris Teeter) that you set yourself — either in Settings, or in the chat when Mae offers the store picker. When you search for stores, we send your zip code or location to Kroger to find nearby stores; we do not save the zip code or location you searched with, only the store you selected. When you ask about grocery prices, if a store is set, we determine which grocery items to look up (for example, "milk" or "eggs") and send only those item names, together with your store's identifier, to Kroger to retrieve current prices and availability. If no store is set, we send nothing to Kroger. We never send your messages or conversations to Kroger. You can change or remove your saved store at any time in Settings. Kroger's handling of the information it receives is governed by Kroger's own privacy policy.

5. DO WE USE COOKIES AND OTHER TRACKING TECHNOLOGIES?
In Short: We may use cookies and other tracking technologies to collect and store your information.

We may use cookies and similar tracking technologies (like web beacons and pixels) to gather information when you interact with our Services. Some online tracking technologies help us maintain the security of our Services and your account, prevent crashes, fix bugs, save your preferences, and assist with basic site functions.

We also permit third parties and service providers to use online tracking technologies on our Services for analytics and advertising, including to help manage and display advertisements, or to tailor advertisements to your interests. The third parties and service providers use their technology to provide advertising about products and services tailored to your interests which may appear either on our Services or on other websites.

To the extent these online tracking technologies are deemed to be a "sale"/"sharing" (which includes targeted advertising, as defined under the applicable laws) under applicable US state laws, you can opt out of these online tracking technologies by submitting a request as described below under section "DO UNITED STATES RESIDENTS HAVE SPECIFIC PRIVACY RIGHTS?"

6. DO WE OFFER ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE-BASED PRODUCTS?
In Short: We offer products, features, or tools powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, or similar technologies.

As part of our Services, we offer products, features, or tools powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, or similar technologies (collectively, "AI Products"). These tools are designed to enhance your experience and provide you with innovative solutions. The terms in this Privacy Notice govern your use of the AI Products within our Services.

Use of AI Technologies

We provide the AI Products through third-party service providers ("AI Service Providers"), including Anthropic. As outlined in this Privacy Notice, your input, output, and personal information will be shared with and processed by these AI Service Providers to enable your use of our AI Products for purposes outlined in "WHAT LEGAL BASES DO WE RELY ON TO PROCESS YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?" You must not use the AI Products in any way that violates the terms or policies of any AI Service Provider.

How We Process Your Data Using AI

All personal information processed using our AI Products is handled in line with our Privacy Notice and our agreement with third parties. This ensures high security and safeguards your personal information throughout the process.

7. IS YOUR INFORMATION TRANSFERRED INTERNATIONALLY?
In Short: We may transfer, store, and process your information in countries other than your own.

Our servers are located in the United States. Regardless of your location, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, stored by, and processed by us in our facilities and in the facilities of the third parties with whom we may share your personal information (see "WHEN AND WITH WHOM DO WE SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?" above), including facilities in the United States, and other countries.

If you are a resident in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom (UK), or Switzerland, then these countries may not necessarily have data protection laws or other similar laws as comprehensive as those in your country. However, we will take all necessary measures to protect your personal information in accordance with this Privacy Notice and applicable law.

European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses:

We have implemented measures to protect your personal information, including by using the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses for transfers of personal information between our group companies and between us and our third-party providers. These clauses require all recipients to protect all personal information that they process originating from the EEA or UK in accordance with European data protection laws and regulations. Our Standard Contractual Clauses can be provided upon request. We have implemented similar appropriate safeguards with our third-party service providers and partners and further details can be provided upon request.

8. HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: We keep your information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Notice unless otherwise required by law.

We will only keep your personal information for as long as it is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Notice, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law (such as tax, accounting, or other legal requirements). No purpose in this notice will require us keeping your personal information for longer than the period of time in which users have an account with us.

When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymize such information, or, if this is not possible (for example, because your personal information has been stored in backup archives), then we will securely store your personal information and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.

9. HOW DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION SAFE?
In Short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organizational and technical security measures.

We have implemented appropriate and reasonable technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process. However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure your information, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security and improperly collect, access, steal, or modify your information. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk. In some regions (like the EEA, UK, Switzerland, and Canada), you have certain rights under applicable data protection laws. These may include the right (i) to request access and obtain a copy of your personal information, (ii) to request rectification or erasure; (iii) to restrict the processing of your personal information; (iv) if applicable, to data portability; and (v) not to be subject to automated decision-making. You will then be removed from the marketing lists. 12. CONTROLS FOR DO-NOT-TRACK FEATURES
Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to legacy DNT browser signals, which the W3C deprecated in 2019 and which most modern browsers no longer emit. We do, however, honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, which is the modern successor mechanism for automatically communicating your opt-out preference; see the Global Privacy Control section below for details. If a uniform DNT standard is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this Privacy Notice.

Global Privacy Control: We recognize and honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals. If you use a browser or extension that supports GPC, we will treat this as a valid request to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for targeted advertising purposes under applicable state privacy laws, including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). Your Rights

How to Exercise Your Rights
To exercise these rights, you can contact us by submitting a data subject access request, by emailing us at info@mae.recipes, or by referring to the contact details at the bottom of this document.

You can opt out from the selling of your personal information, targeted advertising, or profiling at any time. If you have a Mae account, go to Settings > Privacy & Data and turn off the Marketing toggle. Whether or not you are signed in, our Your Privacy Choices page provides an opt-out too: a one-click control when you are signed in, and an email request channel when you are not.

We will honor your opt-out preferences if you enact the Global Privacy Control (GPC) opt-out signal on your browser.

Under certain US state data protection laws, you can designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf. We may deny a request from an authorized agent that does not submit proof that they have been validly authorized to act on your behalf in accordance with applicable laws.
Request Verification
Upon receiving your request, we will need to verify your identity to determine you are the same person about whom we have the information in our system. We will only use personal information provided in your request to verify your identity or authority to make the request. However, if we cannot verify your identity from the information already maintained by us, we may request that you provide additional information for the purposes of verifying your identity and for security or fraud-prevention purposes.

If you submit the request through an authorized agent, we may need to collect additional information to verify your identity before processing your request and the agent will need to provide a written and signed permission from you to submit such request on your behalf.
Appeals
Under certain US state data protection laws, if we decline to take action regarding your request, you may appeal our decision by emailing us at info@mae.recipes. We will inform you in writing of any action taken or not taken in response to the appeal, including a written explanation of the reasons for the decisions. If your appeal is denied, you may submit a complaint to your state attorney general.
California "Shine The Light" Law
California Civil Code Section 1798.83, also known as the "Shine The Light" law, permits our users who are California residents to request and obtain from us, once a year and free of charge, information about categories of personal information (if any) we disclosed to third parties for direct marketing purposes and the names and addresses of all third parties with which we shared personal information in the immediately preceding calendar year. If you are a California resident and would like to make such a request, please submit your request in writing to us by using the contact details provided in the section "HOW CAN YOU CONTACT US ABOUT THIS NOTICE?"

14. LOCATION DATA
We do not track your device's location. The only time Mae uses precise location is when you choose to share it — for example, tapping "share my location" to find nearby grocery stores. Your coordinates are used for that one lookup and are not saved. Otherwise, location information is limited to approximate region inferred from your IP address. This information is used solely for regulatory compliance routing (such as GDPR and CCPA determinations) and service optimization, and is not stored as a distinct data point tied to your account.

15. OUR AI COOKING ASSISTANT
Mae is an AI-powered cooking assistant — artificial intelligence is core to how the service works, not an optional feature. There is no toggle to use Mae without AI. If you prefer not to interact with an AI-powered service, you may stop using Mae or delete your account to remove your associated data. When you use Mae, your chat messages and cooking preferences (such as skill level, dietary preferences, household size, and food allergies you choose to share) are sent to Anthropic, our AI provider, to generate responses. Chat history and preferences are stored in Mae's database to personalize your experience. Any photos you upload in chat are sent to Anthropic solely to process your request. Photos you attach are also stored securely in your Mae account so your conversations can display them. Location metadata is removed from photos before upload, stored photos are visible only to you, photos you attach but never send are automatically deleted within 48 hours, and stored photos are deleted when you delete the conversation or your account. Anthropic is prohibited by its Commercial Terms of Service from using your inputs to train its models. If you voluntarily share dietary restrictions, food allergies, or other health-adjacent information in chat or in your settings, that information is used to tailor recipe recommendations through the AI assistant. If you choose to send a recipe to Instacart, our grocery delivery partner, we also use it to apply matching product filters (for example, gluten-free) to your shopping results. This information is never shared with advertising partners or used for any advertising purpose.

If you set a grocery store, we also use your saved store and the grocery items you ask about to retrieve prices from Kroger, as described in Section 4. This information is never shared with advertising partners or used for any advertising purpose.

16. DO WE MAKE UPDATES TO THIS NOTICE?
In Short: Yes, we will update this notice as necessary to stay compliant with relevant laws.

We may update this Privacy Notice from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by an updated "Revised" date at the top of this Privacy Notice.
